Myriad Possibilities for Old Kingdom Games

2007-01-20

Old Kingdom Games is delighted to announce a tie-up with Sane Studios, creators of The Myriad Universal RPG System, Vanishing Point and the upcoming Golgotha. The arrangement will see a series of RPG supplements supporting the Myriad Universal RPG System released during 2007 by Old Kingdom Games.

The first releases, under the banner of 'Myriad Gems', will include the 'The Nightmare War' and 'Bronze Gods'. The Nightmare war is a near future sci-fi / horror setting exploring the lives of characters cursed with a nightmare fueled alien legacy their desperate battle for survival in a near future earth. Bronze Gods places characters deep in the heart of wild, barely explored islands surrounded by never-ending storms as they explore ancient ruins, discover remote tribes and work in the service of gods-made-real.

Chris Hill, owner of Old Kingdom Games said: "As a free download, Myriad is a popular choice for games masters and players looking for that little bit more and by using Myriad we easily convert and expand our current properties that include everything a games master or player will need".

Each release will be a complete role playing game detailing the setting, character options, games master information, campaign options, non player characters, equipment and much more. Additional material will be released at the Old Kingdom Games website for free to support each Myriad Gem.

Commenting on the announcement, Ashok Desai, owner of Sane Studios said "From the outset, we intended the Myriad Universal RPG as a modular, rules light option allowing games masters to develop custom systems to bring their game ideas to life - we specifically launched Myriad as a free download under the Creative Commons method to meet that objective. We feel with around 1,000 downloads already we've certainly succeeded. With OKG launching The Nightmare War and Bronze Gods using Myriad, we're looking forward not only to seeing material supporting gamers who already have Myriad, but to more players and games masters giving Myriad a try"

More information can be found at www.oldkingdomgames.com and www.sanestudios.co.uk.

Myriad, the RPG toolkit can be downloaded free of charge from Sane Studios and an extended hardcopy version is also available.

The Nightmare War d20 System is currently available from Old Kingdom Games and Bronze Gods d20 System is due in April 2007.

Open call for freelance editor

2006-12-19

Old Kingdom Games (www.oldkingdomgames.com) is looking for quotes from freelance editors for a project to start around late January / early Feb '07. Completion date would be mutually agreed although expect it to be a matter of weeks not months :)

Some details:

System: d20 3.5
Setting: Good old fashioned fantasy, with a twist
Wordcount: Approx 40,000 (may come in slightly higher or slightly lower)
Content: Both 'fluff' and mechanics, around 50/50
Release: PDF with possible P.O.D. in the future (PDF sales dependant)

Payment: Payment will be 100% upon completion if this is your first time working for us. We typically pay 50% up front but due to having been stung in the past we like to get one project completed with you first. We have financial references available upon request from freelance writers and artists who have worked with us in the past if you'd like them.

If you are interested please:

 • send us examples of your work illustrating relevant setting and mechanics editing (preferably in .rtf or .doc formats please, no PDF's or image files)
 • send us both a word rate in USD as well as a whole project cost (we'll keep your word rate on file for future reference)
 • we've not hired a freelance editor before, and this is for a PDF publication so we won't be paying freelance rates for print (we don't want to waste the time of exclusively print editors out there)

It is likely to be after the Christmas period before we get back to you with a decision however everyone who gets in touch will receive confirmation that submissions have been received and notification of if you have or have not got the job.

Send your submissions to chris AT oldkingdomgames DOT com

We look forward to hearing from you.

RPG Resource gives The Nightmare War 5 stars

2006-12-17

The first online review for The Nightmare War is up and running at the RPG Resource.

You can read the entire review here and read some excerpts below:

"Beautifully and atmospherically presented, much of this first part could be printed as handouts to set the scene or documents that the characters discover."

"Overall, this is a very good product, taking a basic concept and developing it into something that will run easily with no more than a couple of read-throughs of the material presented, and generating some characters."

"In terms of its intention of being a whole campaign in a single book, it has suceeded extremely well. If you fancy a bit of near-future horror, give it a try!"

Announcing The Nightmare War (d20 System)

2006-08-27

We're delighted to announce that work is underway on the first book in our Campaign Gems series of supplements for the d20 system.

Written by Jason M. Hardy, with contributions from Rob Macdonald, J. P. Quinn and Tiffani A. Hill, The Nightmare War explores a desperate battle for survival in a near future earth.

Possessing the form and memories of a human life and the elusive nightmares of a truly alien past, you must contend with a new life as something more than human.

Distorted nightmares torment you, hinting at a horrible, eternal existance in servitude. Is this your future, or your past?

It's time to find others like you. There must be others like you.

Time is running out. There will be a cataclysm on this earth before they take you, you must be ready.

They are coming!

The Nightmare War is a Campaign Gems series book from Old Kingdom Games. Designed as affordable but comprehensive campaign settings giving games masters and players all the information they need to start a new game quickly in a self contained world.

Each Campaign Gem contains:

 • enough setting information to get your campaign up and running quickly
 • layout with the games master in mind providing quick reference tools
 • character classes tailored to the setting including web expanded character classes
 • key antagonists
 • new feats
 • new skills
 • setting specific equipment
 • adventure gems - an assortment of adventure ideas in the theme of each book
 • A host of games master and player aids including reference sheets and downloadable content

Each Campaign Gem is supported before and after launch with free downloads such as character sheets, previews and supplementary material expanding upon the themes already covered in the book release.

Writers open call for lead writer on our first Campaign Gem!

2006-06-17

:: THIS OPEN CALL HAS NOW CLOSED ::

At Old Kingdom Games we want to invite writers (no artists at this time please) to express their interest in a paid assignment to complete approximately 20,000 words for our first book in our upcoming Campaign Gems series of supplements for the d20 system.

This is a small press publication for PDF release. Payment terms are OKG’s standard 50% before starting work but and 50% upon completion of contract. The work will be published after this. Rates are available upon completion of a confidentiality agreement. This is not a royalty arrangement, however please be aware that this is a small press, PDF release and small press rates will apply. We are a new company however financial references for previously paid freelancers are available.

This project has a setting / theme outlined. The setting is near future earth, there are shades of horror, and characters are on the run in our world from a malevolent intelligence that has enslaved them in the past. A more detailed overview is available after NDA and contract assignment. You’ll be expected to take this overview and make it your own.

Due to the nature of the book, the entire work is to be offered to a single freelancer with ideal (although no set in stone) completion of writing to be by the end of July / beginning of August to allow for a end of Q3 / beginning of Q4 release. There is some movement in this, but not a great deal.

You will:

 • ideally have knowledge of the d20 system / license
 • be able to take an idea and expand upon it considerably
 • be expected to provide descriptive text but no game mechanics. Mechanics are done in house be expected to deliver the setting, character class descriptions, technology descriptions, games master background information, NPC/Antagonist descriptions and adventure ideas
 • be comfortable writing for a near modern, near future setting (think Minority Report movie levels of tech to some degree)
 • be able to work a hint of dread, desperation and horror into your writing
 • feel comfortable in coming up with your own ideas
 • be prepared to take payment by paypal or moneybookers (makes life easier all round)

To submit your interest please:

 • send and email to chris AT oldkingdomgames DOT com (away with you spam!) confirming your interest
 • include an example of previous work you think we will find relevant (keep this to one page or less please)
 • list previous writing credits in full (if you've already been published)
 • expect to be required to sign a confidentiality agreement by return
 • expect to be required to sign a contract
 • expect responses from me during this open call once daily (in case of high volume)

Many thanks in advance, I look forward to working with one of you.

Announcing Campaign Gems d20 System

2006-05-30

Not everyone is fortunate enough to have a 'regular' gaming group - we'll bet you've sometimes had difficulty getting a game together or, as a games master, had to (frantically?) put a game together at short notice?

Wouldn't it make a change to have a complete campaign that reads quickly, gives plenty of setting information to get you started and provdes players with enough options for dozens of game sessions without having to be concerned about what the next 'splat' book contains?

Well, we think we've got just what you're looking for.

Our first line of products will be our Campaign Gems series of mini-campaign books.

Campaign Gems are designed as affordable but comprehensive campaign settings giving games masters and players all the setting information they need to start a new game quickly. Campaign Gems use the wildly popular d20 System for its core game mechanic.

Each book will contain:

 • enough setting information to get started straight away
 • character classes tailored to the setting
 • key antagonists
 • new feats
 • new skills
 • new equipment
 • adventure gems - adventure ideas in the theme of each book

Each Campaign Gem will be supported before and after launch with free downloads such as character sheets, previews and supplementary material expanding upon the themes already covered in the book release.
